Faculty of Life and Medical Sciences / Graduate School of Life and Medical Sciences

Faculty of Life and Medical Sciences

Preparing Highly-Educated Engineers and Researchers for the Future of the Life and Medical Sciences. Interest in medicine, welfare, and health has dramatically increased. We have also noticed a strong need for solutions to problems--for example, how to increase our healthy life span and how to lower the huge social burden associated with medical and nursing care-related costs. The Faculty of Life and Medical Sciences was established to meet these contemporary social demands. On the basis of broad expertise in the various engineering fields, we will develop professional researchers and engineers who can contribute to the future of medicine.

Department of Biomedical Engineering

Department of Biomedical Engineering

Creating New Technologies in the Interdisciplinary Fields between Medicine and Engineering
Undergraduate students study advanced technologies developed for human health and welfare in the interdisciplinary fields between medicine and engineering. In the department, the research areas of focus are:

  • Medical robotics and rehabilitation equipment assisting human activities
  • Tissue engineering and regenerative medicine
  • Biomimetic and biocompatible materials

Department of Biomedical Sciences and Informatics

Department of Biomedical Information

A Deep Understanding of Human Bodily Mechanisms and Their Application to Advanced Engineering Technology
Students study in the integrated scientific field of information and electronics engineering and medicine.Research topics: investigation of the human brain as an information processor, sensing technology, and development of new medical devices.

Department of Medical Life Systems

Department of Medical Life Systems

Approaching the Mechanisms of Our Sophisticated Human Body and Its Repair Systems
Students study a broad range of basic medical sciences, such as molecular biology and cell biology as well as anatomy and physiology. Students are also introduced to the fields of clinical medicine. Students pursue research and development in a manner that will contribute to basic medicine by preventing diseases, enhancing human health, and providing new therapeutic methods, based on an understanding of the structure and function of the human body and disease mechanisms.

Graduate School of Life and Medical Sciences

In this aging society with a declining birth rate, we need to realize rapid solutions for various problems, such as improvement in health and quality of life as well as reduction in the economic burden stemming from the cost of social insurance, medicine and healthcare. For this purpose, individuals are requested to obtain high and wide points of view and technology to handle problems with a broader perspective and the right scientific knowledge. The Graduate School of Life and Medical Sciences has been established to offer an educational system based on the idea of strong cooperation between engineering and medical sciences. It is expected to develop the new aspects of research and study areas, taking in the up-to-date results of the life sciences.

Major of Biomedical Engineering and Informatics

Major of Biomedical Engineering and Biomedical Information

The purpose of this course is to produce leading-edge engineering graduates, who can create new technologies by applying the innovative ideas of the superior actual biological functions of humans and other living substances. The integration of medical perspective with mechanical, information and electronic engineering points of view offers a new education for the self-independent as well as creative engineers and researchers.

Major of Medical Life Systems

Major of Medical Life Systems

The phenomena of life are studied in this course, which regards human beings as one unique system of life. The main topic of research projects is the clarification of various epidemiological mechanisms arising from imbalances in systemic control systems and the prevention and treatment of such problems.

The large Kyotanabe Campus, which has a total area of 790,000 square meters, houses the Graduate School of Engineering and the Graduate School of Culture and Information Science. These schools closely collaborate through education and research. The Ishinkan building, built for the Graduate School of Life and Medical Sciences, rises six stories above the ground and has one story underground, and contains world-class laboratory and research equipment.

In 2006, the Gakkentoshi Campus in the Kansai Science City was established as a new base for research at Doshisha University. The Kaifu-kan building there is located next to the hospital of a medical corporation, with which Doshisha has a framework agreement.
